Information for employees

Are you deaf or hard of hearing and are looking for employment? Or perhaps you are already employed and are seeking support to make working with deafness or hearing loss easier?

We know how stressful it can be looking supportive workplaces and fulfilling jobs for deaf people and the hard of hearing, so we created a handy guide. It’s filled with lots of resources and advice on how to take your first steps into employment and be fully supported when you are working.

Access to work

The UK Government’s Access to Work scheme can help pay towards the costs of any communication support or assistive equipment you require to work.

Not only can they help once you are in employment, but they can also provide communication support for job interviews.  Check out Deaf Action’s Communication & Interpreting Agency, to find out what would be most helpful for you.

There is also a lot of equipment that can help at work, including hearing loops, amplified telephones, flashing fire alarms, and listening equipment. If you would like advice on what specialist products could help you in the workplace contact our Specialist Equipment Service.

If you are a BSL user and require urgent employability support, please contact our Social Care Service, who will refer you onto the appropriate service.

As an employer we know you might feel a little daunted if you have not received any previous deaf awareness training. You may even wonder if your workplace offers suitable jobs for deaf people or not. Under equality law, as an employer you must make reasonable adjustments (changes) for people who are deaf or hard of hearing and provide extra support, so that they aren’t put at a substantial disadvantage.

Can employers access grants to support deaf employees?
