Billy-Jack’s story

“This is going to be really hard. What if I lose my friends?”

The real impact of face masks on deaf students

We caught up with Billy-Jack, one of our youth group volunteers. Billy-Jack is a deaf student, and has shared his concerns with us about face masks in schools.

Deaf students in Scotland face additional challenges at school, as face coverings are mandatory in corridors and communal areas, creating barriers to everyday conversation.

The solution is clear. We want to see investment into clear masks by The Scottish Government, so that lipreading and communication is made easier for pupils like Billy-Jack.

Help deaf students

If you work in a school, you can wear a clear face mask. Find out where to get them here. Or you can write to your local MSP to encourage them to make positive changes in education by using this template.
