SQA Level 1 BSL – Intermediate 1

This course is designed for those who have completed the SQA Introduction to BSL course.

If you have not completed the Introduction course but do have experience of using BSL, you may be able to go straight in to Level 1.  This would apply to CODAs (children of deaf* adults) or siblings / other family members of BSL users.  In this circumstance, you will need to attend a skills test with one of our tutors to assess which level you are best suited to joining.  The skills test is free of charge.

Course content

The Level 1 course builds on what you learned in your Introduction to BSL course.  You will cover similar topics but go in to more depth with the vocabulary and context.  You will continue to develop your understanding of BSL grammar, syntax, non-manual features and your receptive skills.

Course objectives

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Communicate using straightforward BSL
  • Understand straightforward presentations in BSL

SQA Level 1 Unit Specification


This course costs £350.  This includes all course fees and SQA registration.  A £50 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your place on the course.

ITA funding

This course is eligible for Skills Development Scotland’s ITA funding scheme. However, applications for ITA funding have closed for 2018-2019 as they have met their funding target. Applications for ITA funding will re-open in April 2019. Click here for more information

For all applications, excluding work sponsored places; a non-refundable deposit of £50 must be received with the application in order to secure a place on the course, with the remaining balance due by the first night of class.
