Communicating with people with combined sight and hearing loss requires specialist skills and an ability to combine a variety of communication techniques that may include Manual Alphabet, Visual Frame Signing, Hands On Signing and Lipspeaking.

Deafblind communicators or interpreters provide access to communication for Deafblind people using the deafblind communication manual alphabet, the block alphabet or any other preferred method of communication.

Deafblindness is often referred to as dual sensory loss or multi-sensory loss.  It is estimated that there are over 5,000 people in Scotland with a combined visual and hearing loss. Many deafblind people will have some level of hearing and/ or vision.

Deafblind Communicators are suitable for:

  • People who have both hearing and sight loss

How people use our Deafblind Communicators:

  • Health Appointments: GP, dentist, hospital, optician, podiatrist etc.
  • Community: accessing groups, attending classes
  • Council Services: council appointments and meetings
