Become a Befriender

Available in the following locations:
  • Dundee

Who are Befrienders?
Befrienders are volunteers who receive specialist training and support to go out and meet with people from Dundee’s deaf*, deafened or hard of hearing communities.

Once you have undergone training and assessment you will be matched to one service user and together you will agree a regular time for meeting.  During this time as a Befriender you will:

  • Provide companionship and assist on social outings
  • Provide company and support for practical outings such as visits to places of interest, groups, libraries and so on
  • Meet up for informal chats and get togethers

You will not be expected to provide any kind of communication support.  It is essential that any communication support is provided by a registered professional. Please see our page explaining more about our Communication and Interpreting Service here.

What happens next?
Once you have applied to become a Befriender you will be contacted by a co-ordinator to arrange a meeting and to chat through your interests and skills. We will always try to match you with someone who shares your common interests.

We will need the name of two referees. We will assist you in obtaining a PVG certificate which can take a few weeks to obtain.

You can read more about the certificate by clicking here. You will then be ready to begin your training!

We will provide you with Deaf Awareness training and Befriending skills. Once you have completed your training you will be ready to be matched to your ‘friend’. Your co-ordinator will meet with you on a monthly basis to support your training needs.

Once we have identified a possible match we will facilitate an introduction and an opportunity to discuss the proposed befriending.

Regular reviews will take place to monitor and develop the befriending relationship.

All that’s left is for you to enjoy the company of your new found friend and start making a difference in someone’s life!
