Deaf Action seeks to open bar to other *deaf and community groups

Located in our Head Office in the heart of Edinburgh’s the city centre, we have a fantastic bar and large social area, ideal for events or community groups to meet.

Currently the Edinburgh Deaf Sports & Social Club (EDSSC) holds a premises bar licence for an area within our Deaf Action head office at 49 Albany Street, Edinburgh.  However, we have requested that EDSSC transfers over the licence to ourselves (who own the building and employ all bar staff) so that we can open the space to other groups when EDSSC does not use it.

Philip Gerrard CEO stated: ‘Currently EDSSC use the room one afternoon and one evening each week.  We would like to hold the licence and seek changes to it to give other *deaf, hard of hearing and community groups the opportunity to use the space. In an ever-challenging marketplace, it is crucial that we maximise use of resources and generate income to help sustain the premises.  We are seeking to reach agreement with EDSSC on this and on catering for their needs going forward’.

As part of this process, we plan to apply to the City of Edinburgh Council to vary the licence giving us full responsibility for running the bar to ensure compliance with legal frameworks and for long term sustainability and vision of our organisation.

During this time of transition, there will unfortunately be no alcohol sold on the premises and the building will be closed at the weekends. However, the deaf club will still meet at Albany Street on a Thursday between 11:00 and 17:00 where soft drinks will be available.

We appreciate your patience during this time and hope to welcome yourself and more *deaf people through our doors very soon!
